Onderweg ontmoet hij veel oude vrienden, zoals Fflewddur Fflam de liedjeszanger, Doli van het Schone Volk, de pratende kraai Kaw en de reusachtige kat Llyan, die hem telkens met opwindende avonturen op zijwegen leidden. De drie tovenaressen van Morva vertellen hem dat hij naar de Spiegel van Llunet moet gaan om te weten wie hij is. De toch is lang en zwaar, hij ontmoet nieuwe vrienden en verre volkeren en leert tenslotte de hardste les van het leven: het aanvaarden van een mislukking.
