Op ontsnapping uit deze schaduwwereld staat de doodstraf, maar Tommo heeft niets te verliezen: iedere toversteenslijper zal vroeg of laat sterven door het giftige zilverpoeder dat vrijkomt tijdens het slijpen. Tommo doet een ontsnappingspoging, maar wordt kort na zijn vlucht opgepakt. Hij doet een beroep op een oude, bijna vergeten wet, waardoor hij acht dagen de tijd krijgt om het eiland te verlaten. Dit is een bijna onmogelijke opdracht door het uigestrekte landschap en de sterke stromingen aan de kust. Tijdens zijn vlucht raakt Tommo ernstig verzwakt.
