Alleen Ottokar van Pap was een uitzondering. Hij hield teveel van dieren om erop te jagen. Het liefst zat hij in zijn ridderzaal boeken te lezen, bij voorkeur boeken over draken. Toen waren er immers nog draken. Ze waren waardevoller dan alle andere dieren samen en toch werd op hen het meest gejaagd. Omdat er van hen zoveel te gebruiken was voor vanalles en nog wat: voor sieraden, zomerschoentjes, paraplu’s, kauwgom, middeltjes tegen reuma en nog veel meer. Geen wonder dus, dat draken met uitsterven bedreigd waren. Om ze te redden had Arnout Ballade, de minnezanger, een uitstekend idee: de bijziende, goedhartige Pap moet in het harnas van zijn overoverovergrootvader, gezeten op een stoer boerenpaard, in het strijdperk treden.
