De hertuitgave van zijn beste verhalen, geschreven in een tijd dat er nog geen tv was, werd ter hand genomen door het Amerikaanse Arkham House, waardoor de samensteller van dit Zwarte Beertje kon beschikken over uniek materiaal dat jarenlang onvindbaar was. In zijn beschouwing ‘Waarom ik spookverhalen schrijf’ merkt Wakefield o.a. op: ‘Ik ben een aartsscepticus, maar naar ik hoop niet van hout. Dat er vele dingen tussen hemel en aarde zijn waarvoor wij geen verklaring hebben, en waarvoor wij, naar alle waarschijnlijkheid, ook nooit een verklaring zullen hebben, dat maakt stellig deel uit van mijn filosofie; en ik heb nog nooit in een verhaal gebeurtenissen ter sprake gebracht, waarvan ik niet overtuigd was dat ze zouden kunnen plaatshebben...’</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
