Sinds Edgar Allan Poe met ‘De moorden in de Rue Morge’ in 1841 het eerste model schiep voor de puzzeldetective, heeft het genre echter de nodige vernieuwingen ondergaan! Deze bundel is dan ook niet blijven steken in het puzzelelement dat de meeste klassieke-detective-verhalen kenmerkt, en dat even ver van de werkelijkheid afstaat als het dagelijkse kruiswoordraadsel in de krant. Wél is aan enkele detectives die volgens de Holmes-methode te werk gaan, recht gedaan vanwege hun originaliteit; zo maken we kennis met Ernest Brahmas’s blinde detective Max Carrados, wiens reuk zo sterk ontwikkeld is dat hij een valse snor kan ruiken! Austin Freeman’s wonderlijke dokter Thorndyke is natuurlijk present, naast het meest ingenieuze dat is voorgekomen uit de breinen van Chesterton, Collins en Doyle. E.W. Horbung, die van de misdadiger een held maakte ­ Raffles! ­ is vertegenwoordigd, terwijl bij Thomas Burke een soort Jack te Ripper lijkt te zijn opgestaan.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
