Het is een boek met een koperrode band, waarop twee slangen staan die elkaar in de staart bijten, en het heet 'Het oneindige verhaal'. Er komen vreemde wezens in voor - nachtalfen, rotsbijters, djinns, trollen en dwergen - die samen het rijk Fantásië bewonen, dat geregeerd wordt door de Kleine Keizerin. Fantásië, begrijpt Bastiaan, wordt bedreigd door een onheil. Maar de Kleine Keizerin heeft al een redder uitverkoren: Atréjoe, een jongen van een jaar of tien. maar dapper als een man. Met zijn kleine wilde paardje trekt Atréjoe er op uit om zijn land te redden. Al lezend over de avonturen die Atréjoe beleeft, voelt Bastiaan hoe het verhaal hem trekt.
