Barlennan en zijn matrozen ondernemen de tocht naar de binnenlanden met hun schip in ruil voor kennis die de Vlieger ze geven zal. De Vlieger leidt de tocht uit de verte per tv. Tijdens de tocht wisselen ze informatie uit, zodat beide wezens langzamerhand een beter begrip van elkaars leven en denken krijgen. Maar Barlennan is een geslepen handelaar.
