Twee decennia voor Jevgeni Zamjatins Wij en een halve eeuw voor George Orwells Animal Farm en 1984, deed Richter dat onder de vorm van een politieke toekomstroman. Eugen Richter (1838-1906) was een Duits politicus, voorman van de links-liberale Deutsche Fortschrittspartei. In 1891 publiceerde hij zijn Sociaaldemocratische toekomstbeelden, een politieke satire van het leven onder het socialisme, die ontelbare malen werd herdrukt en in de belangrijkste Europese talen werd vertaald. Richters boekje is vandaag grotendeels vergeten.
