Het schip is een wereld in zichzelf, 8 km lang en 600 m breed. Op de concentrisch gelegen 'dekken' liggen kantoren, boerderijen, woningen en hydroponische tuinen. Een andere wereld kent Hugh Hoyland niet. Maar als hij zich waagt op de gewichtloze dekken waar de 'mutties' leven, monsterlijk vervormde mutanten, ontdekt hij de ware toedracht van de geschiedenis.
