Wat heeft de vitale, barbaarse ‘tough guy’, ook als ‘hardboiled dick’ en ‘private eye’, bekend staande held uit de Nieuwe Wereld gemeen met zijn vermoeide, door twintig eeuwen geschiedenis belaste collega aan de andere kant van de oceaan? Feit is dat de beste vertegenwoordigers van het hardboiled genre zoals Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James M Cain, Horace McCoy en Cornell Woolrich zich dankzij de directheid waarmee ze existentialistische thema’s in hun werk hanteerden, al vroeg in een enorme populariteit mochten verheugen in Frankrijk, en dat leidde tot het ontstaan van een ‘littérature noire’ die buitengewoon geliefd was in de kringen van de toenmalige Saint-Germain der Prés. Eén van de eerste uit dit milieu afkomstige Franse schrijvers die onder het mom van hardboiled ontspanningsliteratuur gebruik maakten van thematiek en stijlmiddelen van de Amerikaanse voorbeelden, was Boris Vian wiens onder het pseudoniem Vernon Sullivan geschreven romans zelfs een tijdlang doorgingen voor vertalingen uit het Amerikaans. Daarmee werd een nieuwe fase in de Franse misdaadroman ingeluid, die leidde tot de uitgave van de legendarische Serie Noire, een reeks die tot vandaag de dag tot de bestverkochte serie misdaadboeken in Frankrijk behoort en waarin inmiddels al bijna 2.000 titels zijn verschenen. De Serie Noire bevat behalve veel oorspronkelijk werk ook het allerbeste uit de Angelsaksische hardboiled literatuur. Dit in Nederland en België nog nauwelijks bekende fenomeen wordt nu in Zwart &amp; Hard voor de lezer toegankelijk gemaakt.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
