De Hirli schijnen in contact te staan met de Sirka’s uit Ithar, die al eeuwen de Joeraanse aanvallen weerstaan. Als Joeran en Ithar in hun vrijheid bedreigt worden door een afschuwelijke uitvinding uit Canbia, besluit Dom Ayo, Zia’s grootvader, een heimelijk verbond aan te gaan met de leider van de Sirka’s, om de Canbiaanse formule te stelen. Eén Hirl is bereid te helpen en neemt Zia, Youri en twee jonge Sirka’s onder zijn bescherming, mits zij de prins van Canbia bij hun taak betrekken, wat een onmogelijke opgave lijkt. Door een levend teken van de Gouden Kelk samengesmeed tot een broederschap, proberen zij hun taak, die méér is dan het stelen van de formule, te vervullen. Maar eenmaal in Canbia raken ze in een maalstroom van gebeurtenissen ver van hun eigenlijke doel verwijderd. Net als de succesvolle trilogie ‘De tocht naar morgen’ is deze boeiende toekomstroman niet zondermeer als jeugdroman te kenschetsen. Ook volwassenen zullen geboeid raken door deze indringende schildering, waarin Doris Heinemann opnieuw op overtuigende en levendige wijze haar vakmanschap toont.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
