Dit kan natuurlijk niet goed gaan en als hij uit een bewusteloze toestand bijkomt, bevindt hij zich op een andere Aarde en heeft hij de identiteit van de onbetrouwbare, sluwe Alec Graham aangenomen. Zijn gezellin, de mooie Deense Margrethe, heeft echter niets in de gaten. Als op een nacht het schip op een ijsberg loopt worden Alex/Alec en Margrethe overboord geslingerd en opnieuw belanden ze in een andere wereld. Zonder een cent op zak, maar vol vertrouwen weten zij zich toch te handhaven. Langzaam maar zeker komt Alex/Alec tot de ontdekking dat de Dag des Oordeels nabij moet zijn en weldra klinkt voor hem inderdaad het laatste hoorngeschal. Tot zijn verbazing wordt hij in de hemel heilig verklaard. Maar hij mist zijn Margrethe en vrijwillig daalt hij tot de hel af.
