Begaafde schrijvers als Robert Bloch, Colin Wilson en Ramsey Campbell lieten zich erdoor inspireren en droegen aldus bij tot de instandhouding van deze mythe die gebaseerd is op de leer of legende dat de aarde ooit werd bewoond door wezens die de zwarte magie beoefenden, daardoor hun macht verspeelden en werden verbannen; maar ergens levend in de ruimte van het heelal wachten zij op hun kans om de aarde weer in bezit te nemen. Behalve de, voor het merendeel, overbekende Cthulhu-verhalen schreef Lovecraft ook een groot aantal meer 'klassieke' griezelverhalen waarvoor als inspiratiebron dienden het werk van Edgar Allan Poe, Ambrose Bierce, J.K. Huysmans, en, niet in de allerlaatste plaats, zijn eigen macabere dromen die hij zorgvuldig in een dagboek noteerde.Deze kant van Lovecraft - de pure 'Gothic' fantasy en horror - is minder bekend; voor velen zullen de in deze omvangrijke anthologie opgenomen korte en minder korte 'Shockers' dan ook een aangename, zij het zeer huiveringwekkende verrassing zijn.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
