Dan ontmoet hij in een café een klein, mismaakt mannetje dat belooft Nick te helpen - tegen een hoge prijs!  De dwerg beschikt over bizarre, mysterieuze gaven. Hij kan Nick rijk en beroemd maken, mits deze bereid is alles te doen wat hem wordt opgedragen. Nick accepteert het aanbod en wordt meegelokt naar lugubere oorden, waar hij gedwongen wordt de meest brute misdaden te aanschouwen. Daarna zijn Nicks schilderijen zó levensecht, zó briljant en zó bezeten van een duistere, negatieve kracht dat het grote succes niet langer uit kan blijven. Maar dan komt het sinistere mannetje zijn gruwelijke beloning opeisen.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
