Een geheimzinnige kaart uit het jaar 1790 speelt een belangrijke rol, want deze zou het bestaan van een grote schat kostbaarheden kunnen bewijzen. De moeilijkheid echter is nu de juiste plaats vast te stellen, waar precies die schat moet liggen en het is niet zeker, op welk eiland van de uitgebreide groep der Seychellen men moet zoeken! Dat zich hierbij onvoorziene moeilijkheden voordoen is al direct duidelijk en dat er letterlijk kapers op de kust zijn, bewijst wel de warme ontvangst in de vorm van geweerkogels, die Lex op een gegeven moment worden toegezonden. Maar Lex is er nu eenmaal de man niet naar zich door welke tegenslag dan ook te laten weerhouden. Dat hij in zijn ijver niet de goudschat, maar een uiterst geheim atoomlaboratorium ontdekt, verhoogt de spanning en dat  hij daarbij in grote moeilijkheden raakt is zonder meer duidelijk, wanneer men bedenkt, dat het eiland, dat hij met zoveel moeite heeft betreden, door de inheemse bevolking angstig het 'Het Eiland der Verschrikking' wordt genoemd.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
