Onder hen is Ray Bradbury onbetwist koning. Deze auteur gebruikt vrijwel geen verzonnen toekomsttechniek in de ingewikkelde zin van het woord. Hij heeft daar trouwens geen verstand van en wenst dat ook niet te hebben. Wel schildert hij hier met eenvoudige middelen een vermaterialiseerde maatschappij. De centrale figuur van het verhaal herontdekt evenwel in een langzaam, pijnlijk proces de poëzie van het leven. Hij ziet in wat er aan de maatschappij schort en komt met  haar in conflict op leven en dood. Slechts met grote moeite weet hij haar te ontsnappen. Ray Bradbury schrijft zuiver dichterlijk. Men komt aanstonds in de ban van zijn visie, zijn kijk door de dingen heen, van zijn markante stijl en scherp geschetste beschrijvingen van zelfs de simpelste zaken. Aan het titelverhaal zijn twee korte toegevoegd, die de veelzijdigheid van dit grote talent nog sterker helpen belichten.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
