Richard Carl Laymon was een Amerikaanse auteur van suspense- en horrorfictie , met name binnen het subgenre splatterpunk. Hij woonde als tiener in Tiburon, Californië. Hij studeerde af aan Redwood High School, behaalde vervolgens een BA in Engelse literatuur aan de Willamette University in Oregon en een MA in Engelse literatuur aan de Loyola University in Los Angeles. Zijn werken omvatten meer dan zestig korte verhalen en meer dan dertig romans, waarvan er enkele zijn gepubliceerd onder het pseudoniem Richard Kelly. Twintig van zijn verhalen werden gepubliceerd als onderdeel van de Fastback Mystery-serie - enkele korte verhalen die in boekvorm werden uitgebracht. Ondanks de lof van vooraanstaande schrijvers binnen het genre, waaronder Stephen King en Dean Koontz, was Laymon weinig bekend in zijn vaderland - hij genoot meer succes in Europa, vooral in het Verenigd Koninkrijk - tot hij in 1999 bij Leisure Books ging werken. Laymon geloofde dat dit was het resultaat van een slecht bewerkte eerste release van 'The Woods Are Dark', waarvan meer dan vijftig pagina's waren verwijderd. De slechte montage en de onaantrekkelijke albumhoezen stopten zijn carrière na het succes van 'The Cellar​ Laymon's' originele versie van 'The Woods Are Dark' werd uiteindelijk in juli 2008 gepubliceerd door Leisure Books en Cemetery Dance Publications, nadat hij door zijn dochter Kelly was gereconstrueerd op basis van het originele manuscript. Zijn roman 'Flesh' werd door Science Fiction Chronicle uitgeroepen tot Beste Horrorroman van 1988, en zowel 'Flesh' als 'Funland' werden genomineerd voor de Bram Stoker Award, net als zijn non-fictiewerk 'A Writer's Tale'.
