Studeerde af aan New Utrecht High School , waar hij een vroegrijpe student was geweest. Ellin volgde een opleding bij het Brooklyn College en behaalde een Bachelor of Arts in 1936, toen hij 19 jaar oud was. Hij trouwde in 1937 met Jeanne Michael, een freelance redacteur en voormalig klasgenoot. Ze hadden een dochter, Sue Ellin (Mrs. William Jacobsen), en een kleindochter, Tae Ellin. Afgezien van enkele reizen naar het buitenland en wat tijd doorgebracht in Miami Beach, Florida , leefde hij zijn hele leven in Brooklyn. Om zijn gezin te onderhouden, werkte Ellin als een tijdschrift verkoper en distributeur, leerling boilermaker, staal arbeider , scheepswerf arbeider, melkveehouder en junior college leraar voordat hij in het Amerikaanse leger in 1944-1945 dienst nam tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog . Daarna begon Ellin, aangemoedigd door zijn vrouw. met het full-time schrijven, terwijl zijn gezin leefde van zijn leger werkloosheidsuitkering en het salaris van zijn vrouw. Terwijl zijn romans werden geprezen, is hij vooral bekend om zijn korte verhalen. Hij debuteerde in mei 1948 met één van de meest beroemde korte verhalen 'De specialiteit van het huis' dat verscheen in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Hij ontving drie Edgar Allan Poe Awards ( Edgar Award ). Ellin was een lange tijd lid en voormalig voorzitter van de Mystery Writers of America (MWA). In 1981 werd hij bekroond met de hoogste eer van de MWA's, de Grand Master Award . Overleden in het  Kings County Hospital Center te Brooklyn, New York aan de gevolgen van een hartaanval en de complicaties van een beroerte.
