Hij was de onwettige zoon van Johanna Carolina Dorothea Bechstein en een Franse emigrant genaamd Louis Dupontreau. in 1810 adopteerde een oom, Johann Matthäus Bechstein, hem. Door zijn oom kon hij naar de middelbare school gaan in Meiningen en van 1818-1821, een apotheker opleiding volgen  in Arnstadt , waar hij vervolgens werkte als assistent vanaf 1824. Reeds in 1823 presenteerde hij de Thüringischen Volksmärchen als C. Bechstein. Hij werd in 1826 assistent apotheker in Meiningen en 1828 als Provisor in de Swan apotheek in Salzunzungen. Echter vond hij deze activiteit professioneel niet bevredigend. Herzog Bernhard II. Of Sachsen-Meiningen verleende Bechstein een beurs om filosofie, geschiedenis en literatuur te studeren. Hij begon het onderzoek in 1829 in Leipzig , waar hij als lid van de broederschap toetrad, en zette deze in 1830 in München voort.  Bechstein werd in 1833 benoemd tot hertogelijk kabinet bibliothecaris in Meiningen als hoofd van het hertogelijk openbare bibliotheek. Hij richtte in 1832 de antieke onderzoekende Hennebergisch club op, die hij presideerde als directeur tot 1857. Overleden te Meiningen. Zie ook bij: Bechstein, L.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
