Zijn vader was redacteur en predikant van Helgelseförbundet (de Sanctification Union); Jersild verliet zelf als jonge tiener het christelijk geloof. Jersilds moeder had haar literaire aspiraties opgegeven. Ze werd nooit gelukkig in de rol van huisvrouw en moeder. Hij publiceerde zijn eerste teksten op 15-jarige leeftijd. Na het volgen van een cursus creatief schrijven, geleid door de dichter en criticus Reidar Ekner, raakte hij ervan overtuigd dat zijn ware roeping die van een schrijver was. Na realistische sociale verhalen begon Jersild zijn werk in een meer fantastische richting te ontwikkelen. Hij heeft verschillende literatuurprijzen ontvangen, waaronder de hoofdprijs van de Zweedse Vereniging voor Literatuurbevordering in 1981 en de De Nio-prijs in 1998. Jersilds columns zijn gepubliceerd in de krant Dagens Nyheter. Hij heeft ook een eredoctoraat van de Faculteit der Geneeskunde van de Universiteit van Uppsala van 22 januari 2000 en nog een in engineering van het Royal Institute of Technology (1999).
