Ze ging naar de Seven Hills School tot en met de achtste klas en ging daarna naar de middelbare school aan de Groton School, een internaat in Groton, Massachusetts, waar ze afstudeerde in 1993. In 1992, de zomer voor haar laatste jaar, won ze de fictiewedstrijd van het tijdschrift ''Seventeen.'' Sittenfeld ging naar het Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York voordat ze overstapte naar Stanford University in Palo Alto, Californië.
