Na haar middelbare school studeerde ze Slavistiek aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden in het begin van de jaren tachtig en deed twee jaar postdoctorale studie in Mainz. Het oorspronkelijke plan was om Russische literatuur te gaan vertalen, maar het liep anders. Tijdens haar studie leerde ze een Duitse slavist kennen, met wie ze uiteindelijk ook is getrouwd . Via hem kreeg ze haar eerste opdracht, ''Brieven uit de oorlog'' van Heinrich Böll. Het vertalen uit het Duits beviel zo goed, dat ze daar in eerste instantie haar beroep van heeft gemaakt. De laatste jaren zijn daar ook nog een aantal vertalingen uit het Pools bij gekomen.
