Het was vooral de manier waarop er verteld werd die haar is bijgebleven. Het begon steevast met: 'het is weer zover bij (de Prèterkes of de Verstraetens...)' en dan volgde er geknik en een lange stilte die de volwassenen begrepen en zij niet. Dan kwamen de verhalen over zwevende Mariabeelden, angstaanjagend gekraak en gestommel in de nacht, mysterieuze ziektes bij de koeien en schapen. Er waren ook de kleine dagdagelijkse dingen. Haar grootmoeder die met het broodmes een kruis maakte onder op het versgebakken brood, waarna ze het aan haar borst zette om het te snijden. Heerlijk toch.
