James Elliott Bama was een Amerikaanse kunstenaar die bekend stond om zijn realistische schilderijen en etsen van westerse onderwerpen. Hij groeide hij op met het kopiëren van de Flash Gordon -strip van Alex Raymond. Hij had zijn eerste professionele verkoop toen hij 15 was, een tekening van Yankee Stadium in de New York Journal-American. Hij studeerde af aan New York's High School of Music and Art en ging bij de Army Air Forces, waar hij werkte als monteur, schilder en instructeur voor lichamelijke opvoeding. Toen hij uit de dienst werd ontslagen, en terug in New York City, studeerde hij tekenen en anatomie aan de Art Students League. Vanaf 1951 was hij 15 jaar illustrator bij Charles E. Cooper Studios in New York. Zijn eerste paperback-omslag was Nelson Nye's ‘A Bullet for Billy the Kid’ (1950). Bama had een 22-jarige carrière als succesvol commercieel kunstenaar en produceerde paperback boekomslagen, filmposters en illustraties voor publicaties als Argosy, The Saturday Evening Post en Reader's Digest, en zijn talrijke klanten waren onder meer het New York Giants voetbalteam, de Baseball en Football Halls of Fame en de Amerikaanse luchtmacht. In 1970 werd Bob Meyers vermoord, en zijn weduwe Helen verhuisde van de ranch. De Bamas verhuisden in 1971 naar een huis aan Dunn Creek, Wapiti, 20 mijl buiten Cody.
