In 1966, de jongste van haar zes kinderen was toen twee jaar oud, stuurde ze een manuscript in voor de West-Vlaamse Provinciale Prijs voor het kinderboek. Het verhaal won een premie en verscheen in 1967 onder de titel ''Het begon met een muts'' bij de Standaarduitgeverij. Een jaar later ontving ze voor dit debuut de Referendumprijs voor het Vlaamse Jeugdboek, de voorloper van de Boekenleeuw. Na nog enkele verhalen voor jonge kinderen in kranten en tijdschriften te hebben gepubliceerd, legde zij zich al snel toe op historische jeugdromans. Die gaven haar in thematiek en taal meer armslag.
