Martinus William Benjamin Asscher is een Nederlandse auteur van verhalenbundels, essays, columns, poëzie, non-fictie en voormalig directeur bij Athenaeum Boekhandel in Amsterdam. Hij is een zoon van rechter Benjamin Jacques Asscher en is sinds 2017 mede-eigenaar van Uitgeverij Van Oorschot. Als gymnasiast zag hij een toekomst als classicus en archeoloog voor zich. Zijn ouders echter stuurden hem naar Leiden om rechten te studeren. Tijdens zijn studietijd werkte hij als suppoost in verschillende Leidse musea, waarmee hij het geld verdiende dat nodig was om de boeken te kopen die hij er zat te lezen, bij voorkeur in het interieur van de drie schitterende historische stijlkamers van het Museum De Lakenhal. Asscher studeerde af in 1980 met een doctoraal keuzevak Auteursrecht aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Asscher debuteerde in 1992 met de bundel essayistische verhalen ''Dodeneiland'' en publiceerde daarna nog diverse boeken in verschillende literaire genres. Zijn eerste roman, ''Het uur en de dag'' (2005), was binnen één jaar al aan vijf herdrukken toe. Voordat hij zich fulltime aan het schrijven wijdde, was Maarten Asscher uitgever (Meulenhoff), directeur Kunsten bij het ministerie van OCW en onafhankelijk literair en academisch boekverkoper (Athenaeum Boekhandel). In 2015 promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit Leiden op een onderzoek naar gevangenschap als literaire ervaring ( ''Het uur der waarheid'' ). In 2019 ontving hij de vijfjaarlijkse J.H. Donnerprijs vanwege zijn bijzondere verdiensten voor het Nederlandse boekenvak.</ins></div></td></tr> </table>
