Net als zijn tijdgenoten Algernon Blackwood en Arthur Machen beweerde Rohmer lid te zijn van een van de facties van de kabbalistische Hermetische Orde van de Gouden Dageraad .  Rohmer beweerde ook banden met de Rozenkruisers , maar de geldigheid van zijn beweringen is in twijfel getrokken. Zijn arts en familievriend Dr. R. Watson Councell was mogelijk zijn enige legitieme connectie met dergelijke organisaties. Had een baan bij de Hongkong en Shangai Bank. In 1903 werd hij krantenverslaggever. Zijn eerste gepubliceerde werk werd uitgegeven in 1903, toen het korte verhaal ''The Mysterious Mummy'' werd verkocht aan ''Pearson's Weekly''. De belangrijkste literaire invloeden van Rohmer lijken Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle en parlementslid Shiel te zijn geweest. Hij stapte geleidelijk over van het schrijven voor music hallartiesten naar het concentreren op korte verhalen en feuilletons voor tijdschriftpublicatie. In 1909 trouwde hij met Rose Elizabeth Knox. Hij publiceerde zijn eerste boek ''Pause!''  in 1910. Nadat hij ''Little Tich in 1911 had geschreven (als ghostwriter voor'' de gelijknamige music hall-entertainer ) schreef hij de eerste Fu Manchu-roman, ''The Mystery of Dr. Fu-Manchu'', voor het eerst gepubliceerd in een serialisatie van oktober 1912 tot juni 1913. een onmiddellijk succes, met het verhaal van Denis Nayland Smith en Dr. Petrie die geconfronteerd worden met de vermeende wereldwijde samenzwering van het ''Gele gevaar''. De Fu Manchu-verhalen, samen met zijn meer conventionele detectiveserie-personages - Paul Harley, Gaston Max, Red Kerry, Morris Klaw (een occulte detective) en de Crime Magnet - maakten Rohmer tot een van de meest succesvolle en financieel succesvolle auteurs van de jaren 1920 en jaren '30. Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog stopte hij met de Fu-Manchu verhalen, doch in 1930 begon hij er weer mee<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">. Rohmer's eerste poging om het eigendom van Fu Manchu nieuw leven in te blazen, werd uiteindelijk herwerkt als ''The Emperor of America''. In 1934 verhuisde Sax Rohmer naar een pas gerenoveerd huis, Little Gatton  in Gatton Road, Reigate, Surrey, waar hij tot 1946 woonde. In de 28 jaar van 1931 tot 1959 voegde Rohmer nog eens 10 boeken toe aan de Fu Manchu-serie, wat betekent dat de serie in totaal 13 boeken telt (de postume verhalenbundel ''The Wrath of Fu Manchu en andere verhalen'' niet meegerekend). De Fu Manchu-serie werd bekritiseerd door de Chinese regering en Chinese gemeenschappen in de VS vanwege wat werd gezien als negatieve etnische stereotypering</ins>.
